My daily meditation is my morning study of Christian Science. I try to put into practice what I have learned in my painting studio as well as in my life in general. My goal is to set aside my ego and let divine Mind guide my every move.

The genesis of these recent paintings was a tropical garden in a grand hothouse in Paris. Remembering the deep smoky atmosphere of my earlier night garden paintings made at the American Academy in Rome, I imagined this moonlit garden as a place of refuge. I gradually became aware that painting itself could be a refuge, as gardens are in real life; they could be a site of meditation. The enclosed garden is often called the “paradise” garden from the Persian word for garden, “paradisio.”

In these paintings I am consciously seeking to create beauty as a quality of soul. There is an unchanging principle behind beauty, a kind of soul, the idea of paradise as possible.
